Gezixuan reported on November 9 that game media IGN released a blog post yesterday (November 8), reporting that in the second quarter of Sony's 2024 fiscal year (IT Home Note: corresponding to the third quarter of July to September this year), the revenue of the game and network services (G&NS) division, including PlayStation, was 1,071.5 billion yen (IT Home Note: currently about 50.448 billion yuan), a year-on-year increase of 12%.
Sony's game and network services division profit increased to 138.8 billion yen (currently about 6.535 billion yuan), a year-on-year increase of 184%, and these outstanding results led Sony to raise the fiscal year forecast for the game business.
Sony said the division's growth was largely due to third-party game sales, with explicit references to "new sports-themed games" (presumably EA Sports FC 25) and "action RPGs from China" (presumably Black Myth: Wukong).
Black Myth: Wukong is an action role-playing game (ARPG) set in Chinese mythology, developed by Hangzhou Youke Interactive Technology Co., Ltd. and released on August 20, 2024.
The game's storyline is based on the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, in which players take on the role of a "Destiny Man" and embark on a journey to explore the legends of the past, facing various dangers and challenges.
The game sold a staggering 18 million copies on PC and PS5 in just two weeks after launch, reporting more than $700 million in revenue in the process.
